Edward Bach's Rescue Remedy

Standing out as the only combination remedy in Edward Bach's repertoire of flower remedies, the one we know as Rescue Remedy is also the best-known and the only one most people will ever experience.  Bach created this remedy at the very end of his life and, as the name implies, intended it to be a "quick-fix" in situation involving emotional emergencies.

Bach discovered that during times of great emotional upheaval human beings experience 5 universal impulses:

  • Fainting--as a way to temporarily "escape"
  • Panic--as a result of overactive nerve impulses
  • Rashness--as a way to deal with the urge to act immediately
  • Trembling--as a side-effect of the fear of losing control
  • Denial--as a coping mechanism

To help patients deal with these predictable (yet counterproductive) responses to stress Bach combined 5 of his flower essences and created Rescue Remedy.  The 5 flower remedies used are:

  • Impatiens
  • Star of Bethlehem
  • Cherry Plum
  • Rock Rose
  • Clematis
Bach did not intend his Rescue Remedy to be taken daily, as can be done with his flower essence remedies.  Rather, it was reserved for times of great stress and intended as a way to help people quickly regain control and focus.
