Oak

Botany: Quercus robur
Preparation: Sun Method
Represents: Endurance

The oak tree has long been a symbol of strength and determination. It's strong wood and massive root system allow it withstand disasters that bring lesser trees crashing to the ground. In people, too, oak corresponds to our sense of endurance.

In a positive state, oak personalities are strong, noble people who give freely of themselves. They take pride in common courtesies like never being late and keeping their promises. They are dependable, responsible leaders who work hard and commit themselves to finishing whatever tasks they start. Oak people are our national leaders, community organizers and school fundraisers.

In a negative oak state, however, this idea of always being strong and responsible becomes a warped sense of duty. Often they will work long after the joy of their tasks is gone and often times they are so focused on finishing a task that they don't realize that quitting is the better course of action. This distorted sense of duty tends to robs their souls of happiness and leaves them feeling both emotionally and physically exhausted.

Imagine a young woman who is deeply committed to her family and her community. It is she whom the school calls on to sell candy bars and it is she to whom the family turns in times of loss and sorrow. Our young woman revels in a job well done and deeply appreciates the gratitude shown her after a task is completed. Sometimes the "reward" is a dime-store coffee mug and sometimes it's just a simple "Thank you." Our young woman doesn't care. It's not the reward for which she works.

But our young woman also goes through periods of taking on too much work. Though she might admit to feeling tired, she will never admit to needing help. She's tired, grumpy and makes mistakes.

At these times, our young woman is in a negative oak state. She doesn't understand that by taking a day or two off to "recharge" she will accomplish more. Nor does she understand that asking for help isn't a sign of weakness--it's a sign of an effective delegator.

The Positive Oak State

The positive oak state brings with a deep appreciation for hard work and a love for a job well done. Oak personalities are strong, enduring souls who inspire all who meet them.
